As we motored along the freeways to Berlin, Matej put on videos that showed some of the history of past events and times during the war in Berlin. They were very interesting and gave a background to some of the things we would see today. On arrival to Berlin we did a drive around to see some of the sights and history of this city. We drove past the East Side Gallery which depicts messages of peace and harmony from artists all over the world. It is the longest remaining section of the Berlin Wall, we moved along to visit the Brandenburg Gate, a structure which pays tribute to turbulent times and peaceful ends. The statue of Quadriga with her 4 horses stands high above the gate and represents victory. A very moving place to visit and not very far away is The Holocaust Memorial, a tribute to 6 million Jews killed in wartime and consists of 2,711 dark grey slabs as a point of Remembrance. There are original bricks on the road depicting where the Wall was during turbulent times and plaques to read of the history. The Berlin Wall was a barrier that divided Berlin form 1961 -1989 and kept people from jobs and opportunity in the west until it was taken down in 1989. Checkpoint Charlie was another place of interest that we explored, as it was the only place the foreign visitors could cross from West to East during the cold War.

Next, another side of Berlin was to be seen. A cruise around on again the river Spree which stretches for miles through Germany until it reaches the River Havel. After such a different morning, it was time to relax and enjoy everyones company and chat about our wonderful trip. There was lots to see along the river and kept us busy and comfortable while we enjoyed the moment. Tonight we are staying at The Intercontinental Hotel Berlin and upon reaching that found it to be very nice.
