Crumlin Gaol

The last day in Belfast and we decided to visit Crumlin Gaol walking Shankill Road on the way. There were some different murals as we walked and the houses were very interesting. We did notice that most of them had a vase or arrangement of flowers in their front windows. After many photo stops we came to the Gaol with the unused Court House across the road.

Crumlin Gaol has been renovated so visitors can see for themselves what happened to prisoners when they were admitted to Crumlin.

It was built in 1841 and the first prisoners arrived in 1846. The prison was extended many times to accommodate the number of inmates it housed. There were 14 prisoners hanged here and the last one was Robert McGladdery on the 20th December 1961. It was closed as a prison in 1996 and since then is used for Corporate Events, Private Functions and many other occasions.
