Londonderry
This tour was organized from Australia and an acquaintance that the girls knew from a previous cruise just happened to be a tour guide from Derry! Tony was so pleased to guide us around Londonderry and the tour was amazing.
Our day started when we left Belfast Station on a train bound for Derry. Some time later we arrived and Tony was there to meet us. I'm sure he put the Failte or welcome sign out just for us..after initial greetings we had a coffee and then off to explore.

Our plan was to walk the walls built in 1614 and on the way learn about the history of Derry. The Ferryquay Gate, one of four, was first on our walk and it had a chequered history from 1688. The walls were quite high and solidly constructed and are about 18 feet thick. The 17th century walls are about a mile around and were intended to protect the city. Actors were placed along the walkways telling of times gone by and the hardships people faced in those days.

As we walked along we came to the view of Bogside, the town outside the walls. The area has been a focus point for many of the events of The Troubles in 1969, a fierce three-day battle against the RUC and local Protestants, which became a starting point of The Troubles, became known as the Battle of the Bogside. The very large murals depict unrest and one is dedicated to a young girl killed playing outside after school.

Canons were scattered along the battlements and we were surprised at the size of the cannonballs.

Back in the township and after visiting the Town Hall, we walked across the Peace Bridge which spans the River Foyle.
Thanks to Tony for a fantastic city tour. We so enjoyed our day
