Our tour took us to visit the Atomic Bomb Museum and this introduction to Nagasaki was quite
awesome. The museum had lots of information and exhibits from the war and many videos as well
as horrific artifacts.
The Atomic Bomb was dropped on Nagasaki at 11.02am on August 9th, 1945. Most of the city was
destroyed and many lives lost. One of the first exhibits we saw was a wall clock which showed the
hands stopped at 11.02am. This was found in a house only 800m away from the hypocentre. There were lots
of origami cranes on display all around this museum signifying hope and peace.
After a visit here we left on our coach to go to Peace Park some 10 minutes away. This area is the
Hypocentre where the bomb dropped. Here a black casket has the names of the bomb victims. The main
statue here is a large blue man holding his right arm pointing to the sky signifying the threat
of Nuclear weapons along with his left arm stetched out signifying peace.
Walking around this park area was amazing as many statues were scattered around showing the devastation of war.
Many countries have donated and built statues and shrines depicting their wish for peace for all.
After this visit and a trip back to the ship passing some historical sights as well as city highlights it was time for lunch.
Glover Hill was quite nearby the port so a walk up there was on our itinery. There were many shops along this famous
street and Glover House and gardens were at the top. Many souvenirs were on show as well as lots of local food to try.
Unfortunately we didn't have time to visit Glover House as we had to be back on the ship by 4.30. Maybe next time!
A special event waited for us on the ship - a Japanese drum band was performing in The Palladium. What a fantastic show!
They played for about 30minutes and the visual and sound performance was fantastic. After this The Commodore announced
that a High School Band would be playing on the dock to farewell the Arcadia. Absolutely amazing...
Another wonderful day on this great voyage of ours!
