Elba is the third largest Italian island in the Tuscan Archipelago. We were very excited to go exploring when we docked as this place is very famous because of Napoleon Bonaparte. Once on shore we decided to walk the town
and take in the wonderful architecture and history of the town. First we went to see The Church della Misercordia which included the Museum that housed Napoleon's Death mask.
Unfortunately the Museum was closed. Walking along we found Fort Stella and Fort Falcon and other places of interest. Then it was time to visit Villa dei Mulini where Napoleon lived during his time in Elba. Off then to see the Star Fort,
aptly named as it is in the shape of a star and was one of the strongholds of the Medici Fortification. Magnificent views of the coastline can be seen from here. Coming back down into the town we climbed down many steps
to the old part of town that housed the old entrance door, Porta a Mare meaning gateway to the sea. This takes us to Darsena, the harbour which is full of elegant boats and fishing craft. All in all a wonderful day to start our holiday!
