Shankill Road
Today we were off on a Paddy Campbell's Black Taxi Cab Tour. We had 2 guides, One was George Clooney (or looked like!) and Jim. Driving along the road we could see the fence that seperates the Catholics and the Protestant areas. Many flags were flying and soon we stopped to see the collection of murals that represent some of the Martyrs and others that are prominent in Irish history. The road stretches westwards for approximately 2.4 km from central Belfast and is lined, to an extent, by shops. The residents live in the many streets which branch off the main road. Houses are built quite close to the road. Everywhere are reminders of the challenges that people have faced
|
It seems that these problems have been carried on through the ages as some murals are very old and have a history to them. Then there are the newer ones that depict fairly current events and it shows that the troubles are ongoing.

When we had almost finished our tour we went to a street full of current protest murals showing issues that were happening and demonstrating that people of all ages have something to say.
