Skaftafell and Glacial Iceberg Lagoon
Off we go again and todays journey takes us to Diamond Beach, where the icebergs that are washed up by the waves shine like diamonds!
They are many and varied shapes and its fun to work out what they look like, some fish, some whales and others just sparkling bits of glass..one doesn’t know where to look and the black sand certainly shows these fabulous lumps of ice to their very best. Many colours seem to show in the different light and that brings another dimension to the whole scene. After much running around them and photographing them, its time to move over to the lagoon across the way.

There is lots of snow here on the ground and many visitors come to see this spectacular sight. This lagoon is 180m deep and a natural formation The icebergs float in and settle on the sides of the lagoon or simply float about. They are washed down from the Breiðamerkurjökull Glacier and settle before washing out to Diamond Beach. There are seals here as well that play amongst the ice and seem to enjoy the terrain. The colours of these icebergs are just unique and so different it is so interesting. There are blues, greens, black and sometimes just clear like glass. The mountains in the background really add to the landscape and we were amazed at how some of the blocks of ice found a place to sit on top of some very odd formations under them. Walking around the lagoon was a real experience and it was fabulous to see something very different.
